Job Purpose
The Cloud Release Manager is responsible for planning, coordinating, and governing software releases across multiple SaaS products and services. This is a coordination and governance role, not a hands-on engineering role. The successful candidate acts as the central orchestrator who brings together R&D, Cloud Platform Operations, and Platform Engineering to ensure that change is introduced to production systems safely, predictably, and with full stakeholder awareness.
This role sits within Cloud Services Delivery and works closely with Technical Support to align release windows with customer commitments, service availability, and operational capacity. The Cloud Release Manager does not design or maintain deployment pipelines as that capability is provided by the Platform Engineering team. However, the right candidate brings sufficient technical literacy to assess deployment risk, understand rollback readiness, and hold credible conversations with engineering teams.
Key Responsibilities
Release Planning and Coordination
- Plan, schedule, and coordinate software releases across multiple services and environments, including production and staging.
- Maintain a central release calendar that provides stakeholders with clear visibility of upcoming changes, freeze periods, and deployment windows.
- Work with R&D teams early in the delivery cycle to understand upcoming releases, dependencies, and readiness criteria.
- Coordinate with Cloud Platform Operations to confirm deployment capacity, environment availability, and execution readiness.
- Align release schedules with Technical Support to avoid customer-impacting changes during sensitive periods.
Change Governance and Risk Management
- Serve as the coordination point for change governance, assessing service impact, evaluating risk, and ensuring appropriate approval criteria are met before releases proceed.
- Classify releases to determine the appropriate level of oversight, automation, and stakeholder communication required.
- Ensure compliance with internal change management processes and external audit and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain rollback readiness as a standing requirement, confirming that rollback plans are defined and validated before any production deployment proceeds.
- Facilitate post-release reviews to capture lessons learned and feed improvements back into release processes and automation coverage.
Automation Maturity and Continuous Improvement
- Actively support the organization’s transition toward automated, low-touch deployments by working with Platform Engineering and R&D to identify where manual coordination steps can be replaced by pipeline controls.
- Advocate for governance approaches that are embedded in tooling rather than dependent on manual review, including automated promotion gates, compliance checks, and deployment policies.
- Track and reduce release process toil over time, using metrics to demonstrate progress toward a leaner, more automated delivery model.
- Stay current with contemporary release and deployment practices, including GitOps workflows, progressive delivery patterns, and Kubernetes-native deployment tooling.
- Champion release cadence predictability as a driver of engineering team confidence and customer trust.
Stakeholder Communication and Reporting
- Communicate release plans, status, and outcomes clearly to engineering, operations, product, and support stakeholders.
- Monitor and report on release performance, deployment frequency, change failure rate, and post-release incidents, contributing to delivery health visibility across the organization.
- Act as the primary point of contact for release-related queries across R&D, Cloud Platform Operations, and Technical Support.
- Support incident and rollback procedures during releases, coordinating response across teams where a deployment introduces production issues.
AI Functionality
- Leverages generative AI and automation tools to enhance business processes, analyze trends, support decision-making, and improve employee or customer experiences.
While the job description describes what is anticipated as the requirements of the position, the job requirements are subject to change based upon any changing needs and requirements of the business.
Required Skills
Skills & Experience
- Proven experience coordinating software releases in SaaS or cloud environments, working across multiple teams and services simultaneously.
- Strong stakeholder management skills, with comfort operating at the intersection of engineering, operations, product, and customer-facing teams.
- Working knowledge of CI/CD concepts, deployment pipelines, and modern release automation sufficient to assess deployment risk and engage credibly with engineering teams. Hands-on pipeline configuration is not a requirement of this role.
- Solid understanding of change management practices including impact assessment, risk classification, approval workflows, and audit compliance.
- Familiarity with GitOps principles and the direction of travel toward automated, policy-driven deployments. The right candidate does not need to be a practitioner but must understand the model and be able to support the organization in moving toward it.
- Experience with rollback strategies, post-release monitoring, and incident coordination.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate technical release status into clear stakeholder messaging and maintain a shared view of upcoming change.
- Experience working in Agile delivery environments with multiple concurrent workstreams.
- Experience in multi-service SaaS architectures and microservices environments.
- Familiarity with progressive delivery concepts such as canary releases, blue/green deployments, feature flags, and environment promotion strategies.
- Exposure to release metrics and DORA framework indicators including deployment frequency, change failure rate, and mean time to recovery.
- Awareness of Kubernetes-native deployment tooling and GitOps workflows. Practical experience is a plus but not required.
- Experience using AI tools to analyze data, design workflows, optimize processes, or support strategic initiatives; ability to evaluate AI outputs for accuracy and bias.
- Ability to design prompts and workflows for AI tools
- Experience testing, validating, and refining AI-generated outputs
- Understanding of responsible AI use, ethics, and data governance
Preferred Qualifications
- ITIL Foundation or equivalent process knowledge, particularly across change, release, and incident management.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
