Principal Database Engineer (PMTS) - Database Engineering Team - MuleSoft

Position Overview

MuleSoft is seeking a Principal Member of Technical Staff (PMTS) with deep expertise in database management, Linux systems administration, and a proven track record in schema design and database optimization for open-source database systems. As part of the Infrastructure Engineering Data team, you will lead our RDS account migration initiatives, maintain infrastructure stability, diagnose and resolve performance issues, and drive improvements to existing processes and tooling. This role requires a senior engineer who can operate independently, drive technical decisions, mentor team members, and architect solutions that scale with MuleSoft's rapid growth.

Key Responsibilities

Design, implement, and maintain a large-scale distributed database environment while leading infrastructure initiatives including RDS account migrations, major version upgrades, and capacity planning. Identify and diagnose complex performance issues through proactive monitoring, query analysis, and system-level tuning. Develop automation and Infrastructure as Code solutions using Terraform for database provisioning, patching, and migrations. Architect high-availability and disaster recovery solutions, including database proxy implementations for connection management and failover. Mentor junior engineers, lead technical design reviews, and participate in on-call rotation for production incidents.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience with PostgreSQL and MySQL in production environments, with deep knowledge of database internals, query optimization, replication, and high availability strategies.

  • Extensive experience with AWS RDS including Multi-AZ deployments and read replicas.

  • Strong proficiency with Terraform and automation scripting (Python, Bash). Knowledge of database proxies and connection pooling (RDS Proxy).

  • Strong Linux fundamentals and experience with monitoring and alerting systems.

  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills with leadership experience mentoring engineers and driving technical initiatives.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with database proxy architectures for minimal-downtime operations.

  • Background in Site Reliability Engineering practices.

  • Knowledge of FedRAMP compliance requirements—ability to attain FedRAMP access strongly preferred. Must be U.S. Citizen on U.S. Soil.

  • Experience with large-scale database migrations and additional technologies such as Redis and InfluxDB.

At Salesforce, we believe in equitable compensation practices that reflect the dynamic nature of labor markets across various regions.

The typical base salary range for this position is $216,300 - $313,700 annually. In select cities within the San Francisco and New York City metropolitan area, the base salary range for this role is $237,700 - $344,700 annually.

The range represents base salary only, and does not include company bonus, incentive for sales roles, equity or benefits, as applicable.
