Slack is where work happens. The Slack product policy team is focused on maintaining customer and user trust in and on Slack, so it can stay simple, pleasant, and productive.

In close partnership with the Salesforce Office of Humane and Ethical Use and Slack product leadership, the Senior Director of Slack Product Policy will be responsible for leading our team of policy experts that develop and operationalize policies for Slack’s products and services. You will also oversee Slack’s global policy escalation response process. You will help keep Slack safe and compliant.

This role will require content moderation escalations responsibility, including exposure to potentially harmful content such as images of violence, hate speech, or content that exploits or endangers children. Comfort and experience with trust and safety operations is necessary.

The ideal candidate will have product policy and/or Trust & Safety experience within a technology company. They will have an understanding of the potential societal repercussions of emerging technologies and familiarity with principles that can be used to govern and resolve related product policy issues. You will engage internal stakeholders and executives to capture and integrate a wide range of perspectives into our product policy making process. You will work with Legal, Product, and Security teams. This role will report to the VP of Policy, Office of Ethical and Humane Use and will manage the Slack product policy team.

What You Will Be Doing

  • Form a deep understanding of Slack’s product, customers, and regulatory obligations.

  • Collaborate on content and usage policies for Slack’s products and services.

  • Collaborate with Product teams to craft product-specific policy applications.

  • Handle escalations for complex customer reports of potentially harmful content.

  • Manage critical and high-risk situations appropriately, with resilience and an appropriate sense of urgency.

  • Inspire confidence by setting direction, displaying integrity, and moving toward team goals.

  • Adhere to legal policies and procedures, and guide the operations team in investigating abuse reports objectively and without personal bias.

  • Develop relationships across Slack and Salesforce to advocate for customer safety, privacy, and the best customer experience possible.

  • Stay informed about the dynamic technology and industry trends.

  • Represent Slack within the broader Salesforce Ethical and Humane Use team, help determine how technological shifts in the industry as well as the Slack product may impact our customers and how that translates into policy strategy.

  • Represent Slack in important external media and/or content opportunities.

What You Should Have

  • 10-15 years of work experience, including 7+ years of people management experience in Trust & Safety, Product Policy, or similar roles in a technology company.

  • You are skilled and experienced in crafting product and content policies, and driving them from initial concept to public launch, including working with product and engineering teams on internal tooling and external product changes or updates.

  • You have managed high volume operational teams; ideally you have built a large scale enforcement process and/or team.

  • You have expertise in compliance with online content regulations such as the Digital Services Act, the UK Online Safety Bill, the Australian Online Safety Act, or NetzDG.

  • You are an articulate communicator and enjoy crafting clear and concise messages to cross-functional partners and to customers.

  • You are cool in a crisis and resilient in handling regular exposure to harmful content.

  • You are hardworking and eagerly embrace the challenge of solving problems, both with software and soft skills.

  • You are empathetic and enjoy explaining complex issues to others at all levels of proficiency.

  • You have a high degree of self-awareness and maintain composure. You model this for your team.

  • Strong analytical ability - able to take a complex problem, synthesize detailed information from multiple sources, and construct nuanced top-line recommendations on the path forward. Ability to consider an issue from multiple points of view and weigh the merits of all perspectives.

  • Measurable success in running complex programs from conception to completion in a fast-paced environment while juggling competing priorities. Ability to manage multiple competing projects and maintain a high degree of organization.

  • Strong understanding of the ethical challenges related to diverse communities in interacting with technology.

For California-based roles, the base salary hiring range for this position is $210,400 to $320,800.

Compensation offered will be determined by factors such as location, level, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Certain roles may be eligible for incentive compensation, equity, benefits.
