OpenAI’s Global Affairs team designs and executes the company’s global campaign to build trust in OpenAI externally with policymakers and other key stakeholders, and to build understanding internally of how policymakers, who are reacting to public concerns about risk, are approaching the regulation of AI.
The Global Ideas & Insights Team within Global Affairs monitors global sentiment about our company and our technology, incubates ideas that help actualize the core messages and key themes that are the backbone of our campaign, and produces a range of compelling content to disseminate and explain these messages.
About the Role
OpenAI’s Global Affairs team is seeking a highly skilled and organized Editorial Lead who is an exceptional writer, editor, and strategic thinker, with expertise in international affairs and the ability to collaborate with all manner of executives and colleagues, to join our Global Ideas & Insights Team.
Reporting to the Head of Global Ideas & Insights, you will be responsible for drafting, contributing to, and coordinating a range of content for use with policymaker and public audiences, from op-eds, reports and blog/social posts, to presentations and briefing documents.
Much of the content you’re responsible for drafting will be for senior leadership use; you’ll also contribute to/review content produced across the Global Affairs team to ensure that key themes and core messages are present and cogent. Content will be drafted and reviewed on a range of deadlines from ASAP to a few days or weeks, with multiple pieces on your plate simultaneously.
In addition, you will contribute to the Ideas & Insights Team’s thinking about how to evolve our key themes and messages, and how to articulate public policy frameworks on behalf of OpenAI.
This is a collaborative role that will leverage OpenAI’s existing strengths across the organization, including both policy and technical functions. In addition to collaborating with the rest of the Global Affairs team, Communications and Legal, you will work closely with product and engineering teams to develop the understanding necessary to explain our arguments fairly, accurately and compellingly.
OpenAI releases industry-leading research and tools. You will face new challenges as the impacts of cutting-edge generative AI technologies continue to be explored and as the needs of the company evolve. The Global Affairs Team is a fast-paced environment and flexibility is essential. You will be accountable for adhering to changing deadlines; bridging tensions; balancing technical rigor with accessibility for policy audiences; and prioritizing work based on external news and internal needs.
This role is based in Washington, DC and will require regular travel to participate in meetings and events with key internal stakeholders.
You should thrive in this role if you:
Turn around high-quality, compelling writing projects quickly, with a focus on making big ideas accessible for broader audiences.
Collaborate efficiently and effectively with cross-functional teams and executives, and are comfortable aligning a diverse range of internal and external partners.
Are extremely organized and comfortable tracking both evolving message pull-through, and a range of details to make sure that every nuance in multiple simultaneous written works reflect the right balance of concerns and interests.
Are passionate about the promise of technology and the future of artificial intelligence and thoughtful about its potential risks.
We're looking for a blend of:
Excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills, with the ability to work in different voices and convey complex technical and policy concepts to diverse audiences.
Experience on key foreign and other public policy issues and debates related to AI.
Ability to execute in fast and flexible environments through rapid cycles of evolution of ideas, analysis, decision, and action.
Working comfort with technical concepts related to AI. This can be shown, for instance, by a concrete track record of working collaboratively with engineers or scientists.
Sound judgment, a strong track record of collaboration, and outstanding personal integrity.
Genuine care and knowledge about the impact of technology on society.
