About the Team

OpenAI’s IT organization supports the mission of deploying artificial general intelligence (AGI) for the benefit of all. Our team is committed to providing seamless technological support and solutions to ensure that all OpenAI employees are well-equipped and connected. This enables them to contribute effectively towards our AI research, corporate operations and product initiatives.

About the Role

As the Engineering Manager for Enterprise IT Engineering, you will play a pivotal role in leading and expanding a diverse team of engineers specializing in endpoints, application administration identity and access management, and IT infrastructure. Your strategic vision and leadership will be essential in navigating the challenges of rapid organizational growth, ensuring that our IT infrastructure scales efficiently and securely. Collaborating closely with cross-functional leaders, including the Head of Support, Head of Enterprise Security, and Head of Office Infra, you will drive initiatives that enhance user experience, bolster security, and streamline operations across OpenAI.

In this role, you will:

  • Lead and Develop the Engineering Team: Manage a team of senior engineers, fostering a collaborative and high-performing environment. Implement strategies for team growth, aiming to double the team size by adding at least six additional engineers by year-end.

  • Strategic Planning and Execution: Develop and execute a strategic roadmap for scaling IT operations to support the company’s hyper-growth trajectory. Ensure that IT infrastructure and services are robust, scalable, and aligned with organizational objectives.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with the Head of Support to enhance onboarding processes and user support systems. Work closely with the Enterprise Security team to integrate security protocols into IT systems and initiatives. Coordinate with our TPM to align IT projects with broader organizational goals.

  • Technical Oversight and Contribution: While focusing on strategic leadership, remain engaged with the technical aspects of the team’s work. Provide guidance on projects related to endpoint management, enterprise applications, identity and access management, and IT infrastructure.

  • Process Optimization: Oversee the transition from Jira to ServiceNow for ticketing and enterprise workflows, ensuring minimal disruption and improved efficiency. Implement agile methodologies to streamline project management and delivery.

  • Scale IT Infrastructure: Lead initiatives to scale IT infrastructure, including networks and cloud services, to accommodate rapid employee growth. Ensure that systems are resilient, secure, and capable of supporting the evolving needs of the organization.

You may be a fit for this role if you have:

  • Leadership Experience: Demonstrated success in managing and scaling engineering teams in high-growth environments, particularly within organizations expanding by thousands of employees annually.

  • Strategic Vision: Ability to develop and implement strategic plans for IT infrastructure and services that align with rapid organizational growth and evolving business needs.

  • Technical Proficiency: Strong technical background, with familiarity in macOS management (JAMF), identity management (AzureAD), project management tools (Jira, ServiceNow), and collaboration platforms (Google Workspace, Slack).

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Proven ability to work effectively with leaders across support, security, and program management functions to achieve shared objectives.

  • Operational Excellence: Experience in optimizing IT processes and systems to enhance efficiency, user experience, and security during periods of significant organizational change.

  • Growth Mindset: Eagerness to embrace the challenges and opportunities presented by hyper-growth, continually seeking ways to improve and scale IT operations.

This is a hybrid role and will require 3 days a week in our San Francisco office.
