Company Overview
Docusign brings agreements to life. Over 1.5 million customers and more than a billion people in over 180 countries use Docusign solutions to accelerate the process of doing business and simplify people’s lives. With intelligent agreement management, Docusign unleashes business-critical data that is trapped inside of documents. Until now, these were disconnected from business systems of record, costing businesses time, money, and opportunity. Using Docusign’s Intelligent Agreement Management platform, companies can create, commit, and manage agreements with solutions created by the #1 company in e-signature and contract lifecycle management (CLM).
What you'll do
The Orchestration team is looking for a Principal Software Engineer to help define, architect, and deliver the next generation of contract negotiation and collaboration. Our organization builds world-class AI-powered experiences and is responsible for marquee products like Agreement Desk, AI-assisted Review, Maestro, and Agreement Agents.
As a Principal Engineer, you will lead the charge in turning cutting-edge AI capabilities into seamless, intuitive products. You’ll thrive in the "green field" space—navigating ambiguity, collaborating across functions, and using every tool in the shed (including AI itself) to build faster and smarter. Our team (formerly Lexion, now part of Docusign) operates with a "startup-within-an-enterprise" spirit: we move fast, we put the customer first, and we value engineers who can bridge the gap between complex backend systems and delightful user experiences.
This position is an individual contributor role reporting to the VP, Engineering.
Responsibility
Partner closely with Product and Design to prototype, iterate, and ship new AI-driven features at high velocity
Design and evolve the systems and application logic required to make AI features reliable and performant
Provide the technical backbone that allows the team to move fast without breaking things
Join customer calls to gather direct feedback
Translate raw customer pain points into elegant technical solutions and product improvements
Stay at the forefront of the LLM landscape and LLM-powered applications
Identify how the latest advancements in NLP and Generative AI can be pragmatically applied to our products to solve real-world document challenges
Lead by example in using AI tools to supercharge our own development lifecycle—from automated testing and code generation to streamlining CI/CD and documentation
Work across organizations and functions to align technical roadmaps, clear blockers, and build consensus on architectural changes that impact the broader Docusign ecosystem
Be the steady hand in "vague" problem spaces
Create clarity for yourself and your teammates when the path forward isn't yet defined
Job Designation
Hybrid: Employee divides their time between in-office and remote work. Access to an office location is required. (Frequency: Minimum 2 days per week; may vary by team but will be weekly in-office expectation)
Positions at Docusign are assigned a job designation of either In Office, Hybrid or Remote and are specific to the role/job. Preferred job designations are not guaranteed when changing positions within Docusign. Docusign reserves the right to change a position's job designation depending on business needs and as permitted by local law.
What you bring
Basic
15+ years of software product development experience, with a proven history of building and scaling successful SaaS products in cloud environments
Experience across the stack (.NET is our preferred platform, but we value polyglots)
Experience optimizing a database query or refining an API contract
Experience with Cloud Infrastructure (Azure/AWS), scalable microservices, and containerization (Docker/Kubernetes)
Experience working with Databases (SQL/NoSQL) and Search Technology (e.g., Elasticsearch, Lucene, or vector databases) to power high-performance applications
Experience working across different business units and engineering orgs to deliver unified customer experiences
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or an equivalent technical field
Preferred
Ability to explain complex technical trade-offs to a PM, pitch a new architectural direction to a VP, and mentor a junior engineer—all in the same afternoon
Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related field
Passion for building products that users truly love
Experience using AI/LLMs to speed up your own workflow and are excited to help the team do the same
Practical experience with C#, React, and TypeScript to help bridge the gap between frontend and backend systems
Understanding of the security, privacy, and governance requirements that come with building for large-scale enterprise customers
You take ownership of problems and drive them to resolution, whether it's a production bug or a long-term architectural shift
