What you'll do

As a Lead Back-End Engineer on the Signing Core team, you will play a crucial role in shaping the architecture and development of services powering Docusign’s electronic signature experience. You will accelerate product improvements and lead efforts across multiple engineering teams to modernize our tech stack. You will work on services with high scale and throughput, with a focus on quality and reliability.

Collaborating closely with product managers, designers, and other stakeholders, you will design, deliver and iterate on product experiences that enable our customers to create, review, and manage their agreements more easily. This role demands a high degree of technical expertise, leadership skills, and the ability to mentor and inspire others to achieve excellence in creating outstanding user experiences that meet our customers' needs.

This position is an individual contributor role reporting to the Sr. Manager, Engineering.

Responsibility

  • Architect, implement and maintain some of Docusign’s highest scale services
  • Build the next set of APIs to make Docusign a true development platform on top of which our customers can build integrations
  • Take a data driven approach to discovering root causes of complex problems then lead the implementation of their solutions
  • Design, develop, and maintain scalable, efficient, and secure backend systems and APIs
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including front-end engineers, product managers, and designers, to deliver high-quality software solutions
  • Drive technical excellence and best practices within the team, ensuring adherence to coding standards and quality guidelines
  • Conduct code reviews, provide constructive feedback, and ensure the delivery of high-quality code
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues, ensuring the stability and performance of backend systems
  • Stay up-to-date with industry trends and advancements in backend technologies, and proactively recommend improvements and optimizations
  • Participate in the planning and estimation of development tasks and projects, ensuring timely delivery

Job Designation

Hybrid: Employee divides their time between in-office and remote work. Access to an office location is required. (Frequency: Minimum 2 days per week; may vary by team but will be weekly in-office expectation)

What you bring

Basic

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • 12+ years of experience with database technologies, including SQL and NoSQL databases (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB)
  • 12 + years of experience as a Back End engineer
  • 5+ years of experience in a lead or senior role
  • Experience with programming languages such as C#, Dot Net, C++
  • Experience with software development principles, design patterns, and best practices
  • Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud
  • Experience with version control systems, particularly Git
  • Experience with problem-solving and troubleshooting complex technical issues
  • Experience communicating and collaborating, in an effort to work effectively in a team-oriented environment
  • Experience with containerization and orchestration tools (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Experience mentoring and guiding junior back-end engineers

Preferred

  • Proven track record of driving front-end technical strategy and influencing cross-functional teams
  • Experience in making architectural decisions that balance short-term needs with long-term scalability and maintainability.
  • Passion for continuous learning and staying updated with industry trends.

Wage Transparency

Based on applicable legislation, the below details pay ranges in the following locations:

California: $171,500.00 - $277,025.00 base salary

Illinois and Colorado: $164,800.00 - $232,750.00 base salary

Washington and New York (including NYC metro area): $164,800.00 - $242,225.00 base salary

Washington DC: $171,500.00 - $242,225.00 base salary

This role is also eligible for bonus, equity and benefits.
